Caring for your furniture

Somebody's Dog furniture is made to last and be loved for generations; none the less, natural products require a certain amount of care and maintenance to keep them looking their best. In order to keep your items looking great here are a few basic tips to follow.

Indoors

Where possible your furniture should be placed at least one meter away from heat sources such as radiators and fires and at least one meter from air-conditioning units. While we endeavour to ensure that all wood used in our furniture is kiln dried and seasoned, wood is a natural product and will expand and contract as the temperature and humidity changes. Placing a piece of furniture near a radiator or air-conditioning unit may exaggerate this and could cause permanent damage such as cracking.

Direct sunlight can cause fading and should be avoided for darker coloured woods in particular.

Outdoors

Teak items can generally be left outdoors year round. Exposure to the elements will dry and weather the wood and it will need to be oiled periodically. With time teak will develop a beautiful grey patina as it weathers in, if you prefer to maintain the original honey brown colour then more frequent oiling is generally required and you might consider over-wintering in a shed or garage.

Recommended care

Somebody's Dog recommends that you give your wooden items a quick dust with a soft, lint free cloth at least once a week. For the first couple months your products should be treated with either beeswax or a good oil regularly. Thereafter, a polish is probably only needed once a month or so.

As with any wood furniture the surface should be protected from water and heat marks with coasters and heat mats. Liquid spills should be wiped immediately as bleaching can occur from spills of fruit juice, wine or fizzy drinks due to the acidity in the liquid.

Spray polishes containing silicone should be avoided as they tend to give a milky, white build up and do not give the furniture the required nutrients.

Leather items should be treated regularly with a neutral leather cream.

Suitable waxes and oils are available from Somebody's Dog.
